Pay and conditions

Working for the Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust you will receive all the usual benefits you would expect working for an NHS Foundation, such as a generous leave allocation and one of the most comprehensive pension schemes available in the UK.

Annual Leave

We offer 27 days plus 8 bank holidays which rises to 29 days after five years of service and 33 days after ten years of service.


Our pension includes a generous employer contribution which makes this a significant benefit for employees.

Family friendly benefits


As a major employer with many members of staff who have childcare responsibilities, the NHS Childcare Strategy centres on providing good quality, affordable and accessible childcare to support parents working in the NHS. Benefits for Sherwood Forest Hospitals employees include a day nursery, holiday club as well as schemes to aid wraparound care for working parents. The Staff Support & Benefits Coordinator can provide information on childcare options including contact details, Child Tax and Working tax credits, childcare voucher schemes, emergency care information and information on flexible working options.

Little Millers Day Nursery

Located at King’s Mill Hospital in a purpose built single storey building, Little Millers Day Nursery is registered to provide full day care and flexible sessions for 68 children aged 6 weeks – 8 years, and is open form 7.30am-6.00pm, Monday – Friday.

Holiday Care

The King’s Mill Holiday Club offers a range of varied age appropriate activities for children and young people between 5 and 8 years of age during the school holidays and INSET days. Places are subject to availability.

Support for Carers

We are committed to supporting you to achieve an appropriate work/life balance. For those with carer commitments in any capacity, the Staff Support & Benefits Coordinator is available to support you by acting as an advocate and source of information and expertise.

Staff parking

Staff rates for parking is £12.55 per month across all sites which we are proud to say is on the lower end of the scale for NHS staff nationally. Access to parking is generally good and there always tends to be available spaces.

Salary sacrifice schemes

The Trust offers a number of staff benefits through salary sacrifice schemes, where part of your salary taken at source in payment. By doing this you don’t pay tax, National Insurance or pension contributions on the amount of salary that you have sacrificed. Perhaps the best known salary sacrifice scheme is childcare vouchers. If your child attends Little Millers Day Nursery, we have an on-site nursery salary sacrifice scheme. Alternatively, we have the Fideliti Childcare Vouchers scheme.

In addition to childcare, we also offer a number of other salary sacrifice schemes including: mycar (car leasing scheme), bikes for the NHS, mobile phones, computers and electrical goods, bus to work and shopping vouchers.

Travel benefits


Employees can make savings by signing up to a salary sacrifice scheme which gives the benefit of a brand new employer provided car of their choice. For full details visit the Staff Support & Benefits section of the Trust’s intranet or access the mycar website.

Bikes for the NHS

Bikes for the NHS is a similar salary sacrifice scheme available to fund bikes or equipment. For details about the Bikes for the NHS scheme visit the NHS website during each participation ‘window’ when the scheme is open for applications.

Public transport schemes

If you use public transport such as Stagecoach buses to travel to work you may want to consider joining the Bus to Work scheme. This scheme on Stagecoach buses allows participants to sacrifice salary in lieu of a bus season ticket for use on your journeys to work.

Other benefits, discounts and savings

The Trust supports Commitment to Staff Health & Wellbeing – employees have access to free and confidential Occupational Health and Staff Counselling services. A section of the Trust’s intranet is dedicated to Staff Health & Wellbeing and yoga sessions are held at Mansfield Community Hospital.

A number of local companies offer a discount to Sherwood Forest Hospitals employees including furniture stores, restaurants, car repair centres, florists, hairdressers and driving instructors. Details of these companies and the discount/special offers that are available can be found on our staff intranet site.

The Trust is also committed to facilitating increased physical activity for all, and offers a discount to a great scheme via ‘Everyone Active’ at local participating Leisure Centres.
